Grad Nite - 1984

It’s Grad Nite ’84 complete with the way cool 80’s neon font, this same style was used for Grad Nite ’82, which I posted back in December (link).

This ticket appears not to have been used and was good only on June 13, 1984.

The usual stuff on the back, in addition to alcohol, “marijuana or danger drugs” are not allowed at Disneyland. Were safe drugs allowed? “Hold your own ticket”, how many times must we tell you?

Student information and how to dress in the oh so cool 80’s. In association with 106.7 KROQ “The ROQ of the 80’s”. KROQ is still rocking on 106.7!

Opening for Grad Nites the NEW Alice in Wonderland Attraction. Have you seen this great Alice blog (link) Check it out, I think it's great! Cheap Trick; “The dream police they live inside of my head”… “I want you to want me”, “Aint that a shame”…. Cheap Trick and the Carpenters, works for me! I’ve got some smooth Coltrane playing right now; I guess my music tastes lay in that past…

The Grad Nite ’84 program cover photo has an intentional blurriness to it just like the Grad Nite ’82 program cover, and I will say it again, the early 80’s WERE a blurry mess, trust me.

Is your high school on there?

Tiki Room Vintage Tickets and Music

Forty five years ago today Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room opened its doors and thrilled audiences for the very first time. Today let’s celebrate with a few vintage items.

First up is a pair of what I believe to be the original style of Tiki Room tickets from 1963. I have seen these for sale (rarely) for lots of money (too much) and they always state they are from 1963. They are not dated, but they do match the style of all the original 1963 Enchanted Tiki Room art work. Those of you that have been with the blog since the early days will recognize these from a prior post (link). These have been rescanned and hey, it’s a celebration so we get to see them again.

The back is not very interesting, consisting of just this:

Here is a rare ticket; this is from a “Magi-Pak” ticket book from February 1964. The ticket book contains 15 “Any Attraction” tickets, but since Walt’s Tiki Room was owned by him, not Disneyland, it required a separate ticket (like the ones above). This ticket book has 15 tickets, but one is special, it’s also good for the Tiki Room. The accounting on all of this must have been interesting. How much did “Disneyland” pay Walt to include this ticket in the book? It’s kind of like moving money from your left pocket to you right pocket!

How about some Vintage audio visual fun? “A Disneyland Record” presents songs from Walt Disney’s The Enchanted Tiki Rook. The cover is dated 1968. The 29¢ price was “blacked out”; I wonder what it was changed to?

The record itself is in fine shape for being 40 years old.

This must be the original sound track, it sure sounds fun. I broke it into two pieces, blog spot was not letting me load part two, check back later, I’ll try and update it.

Tomorrow; More Grad Nite? Sure, why not....

Bonus Sunday

Welcome to Bonus Sunday! We’ve got two fun, exciting and totally unrelated items for your Sunday reading and viewing pleasure.

First up, from Wednesday’s Grad Nite ’65 Post (link), here is the complete “Tencennial” newspaper souvenir supplement. I scanned the entire supplement at 400 DPI so it’s a large file for 24 pages. The pages are large and FULL of great color photos, I am sure you will enjoy reading this, I sure did.

Disneyland Tencennial Newspaper Supplement – 114mb

This next item is a great music “video” from 1975. Yes it the Carpenters singing “Please Mr. Postman”, WAIT, before you close this web page you should know that the entire video was filmed on location at Disneyland, some of it on the mine train! If you like the Carpenters and Disneyland this is for you.

Karen loved Disneyland and it really shows in this “video”. Karen wasn’t known for smiling a lot in these old clips, come on “Rainy Days and Mondays” doesn’t have much to smile about. But check her out in this footage; she really has a genuine smile & excitement about her, something she most likely didn’t experience often enough. While Karen is happy as can be, Richard looks, well, not so much.

I had a request for a larger version (Blogspot made it much smaller) Here is the full size .WMV file if you want to download it to see Disneyland a little clearer:

Carpenters "Please Mr. Postman" 1975 - 60mb

A copy of this video has been floating around YouTube for a while but the quality is awful and it was re-edited by some amateur! I ripped the copy in this post from the DVD “Carpenters Gold – Greatest Hits”, released in 2002. I highly recommend it. Yup, I am one of those Carpenters and Disneyland Fans; I will admit it in public. Her voice was special and oh so unique, gone way too soon and dearly missed.

Tomorrow; Hmmm, a little mechanical birdie told me not to tell you...

Donald Duck in Disneyland - 1955

Today’s Souvenir Saturday is a bit of cheat on my part since this post is just a “link” to another blog, but we all benefit from it. Since last Saturdays souvenir of “Donald Duck Goes To Disneyland" - 1955 (link) was such fun, here is a link to a great blog that has TONS of Little Golden Books, fully scanned.

The Blog is called “Golden Gems” and is at: goldengems.blogspot.com

Here is the link to “Donald Duck in Disneyland”, it was posted back in February: (Link)

This is a fun one too, also dated 1955, this almost seems a little older than last weeks book, more “concept” like with the park.

Where is that Tomorrowland????

Barbie runs this blog and she really has some amazing scans, if you had these little golden books as a kid, you gotta check it out.

See you tomorrow on Bonus Sunday!

Grad Nite - 1967

Welcome to Grad Nite ’67! Here is a “Complimentary / Admit One Sponsor” ticket for June 16, 1967. That had to be a little odd to be at Grad Nite and not be a Grad or a Chaperon.

Speaking of Chaperon’s, here is an “Official Chaperon” sticker. I would make a terrible Chaperon, by 2am I would just be looking for a place to lay down & sleep…. "Wake me up when its over".

Here is the great program from Grad Nite ’67. The two ladies on the left look like the just escaped from Sergio Mendez & Brazil ’66. Everyone else looks so happy and inviting that I’m going to go ahead and use that Sponsor ticket!

This program was printed with a different section on this page for each of the days, I have two versions; June 14th and June 16th, 1967.

This part talks about “new advances in science and technology” makes you think there might be some New Tomorrowland stuff coming up in this program, not so.

Great entertainment lineup; Dobie Gray (A few years before “Drift Away”), “The Aggregation” now that’s a cool name, “Aunt Dina’s Quilting Party” at the Mine Train and MORE!!!!

I scanned it with Bill Elliott twice; I have no idea why…. The “Regents”, “Disneyland Humdinger”, the “Individuals” and still MORE!!! They really racked up the entertainment, especially when you consider there are no acts in Tomorrowland *which was christened the “New” Tomorrowland on July 2, 1967. (*From Davelandweb).

For Grad Nites in 1964 & 1965 new Mustangs were given away, 1966 saw GTO’s being given away, now for 1967 it’s the “Car of the Year” the Mercury Cougar. KFWB is still around; its News 980 now (it was News 98 until a few years ago). Do they still broadcast “Grad Nites” from Disneyland on any station?

I think the white space on the right side might be for autographs? Or they just didn’t have the right sized picture.

Is really is, isn’t it?

WOW, that was a fast and fun Grad Nite Week!. Of course, I do have more, but we’ll take a little break from it this weekend, be sure to come back on Bonus Sunday for the Complete Tencennial Guide. Grads don't fear; Next week we’ll visit Grad Nite in the 80’s a couple of times.

Grad Nite - 1966

We’ve made it all the way to Grad Nite ’66 at Disneyland! June 16, 1966 – The usual 11:00pm till 5:00am.

These tickets have a “fun” font and those cool little star-sparkle things, they remind me of the cartoon beginning of Bewitched. I don’t know what the grand prize was (maybe Jason knows?) but I’m guessing it’s not a 1966 Mustang since it’s not stated on the ticket like the 1964 & 1965 Grad Nite tickets.

The usual stuff is on the back. And - HOLD YOUR OWN TICKET, what are you crazy?

The lucky holders of these tickets took advantage of the fact you had to buy a photo with each ticket purchase. The cover is extra thick stock, the type you would get from a mid priced photo gallery, not bad for a buck!

The happy couple, lets call them Ken and Peggy. While getting this scan ready to post this thought occurred to me; Should I be posting someone’s picture on the internet that I don’t even know? I guess it’s mine since I bought it off EBay, the same as many of the other vintage images we see on the other blogs. I suppose if it were “precious” to someone, I wouldn’t have it. Weird…..

Tomorrow: Yes boys and girls, that’s right, Grad Nite 1967!

Grad Nite - 1965

Grad Nite Party at Disneyland 1965! Without a doubt the very best year for Disneyland! Of course to be honest, I am very biased since I was born in 1965. Heck, I wasn't even at Disneyland until 1968, so my statement is very subjective…

Disneyland came up with a great logo for its ten year anniversary or “Tencennial”. Did you know “Tencennial” isn’t even a real word? At least spell check doesn’t like it and Merriam-Webster has never heard of it. I always assumed (mistake) that is was a real word, just like “supercalifragilisticexpealidous

June 17, 1965 – 11:00pm till 5:00am. If you didn’t win the 1964 Mustang on yesterdays post, now is your chance to win a 1965 Mustang! That’s a Grand prize indeed.

1965 has the same rules as “Grad Nite ‘64”, with marijuana still not making the “not allowed” list.

From June of 1965, this is the cover to a special newspaper souvenir supplement that was produced for the “Tencennial”. This is a gorgeous 24 page ALL COLOR newspaper supplement. It’s held up pretty well over the years, the paper is a little yellow, but the photos still look great. Many of these photos appear to be "new" for the '65 Celebration. As Walt says this is a "birthday card" in reverse, a thank you to us. This is really a special treat if you have not seen this item.

Here are three pages from the 1965 Tencennial Supplement. Check back on Bonus Sunday for the entire 24 page scan; don’t miss it, it’s fantastic!

See you in 1966 (or tomorrow)...
